International Association for Miscanthus and Perennial Energy Grasses (MEG) e.V.
The Miscanthus Society, officially the International Association for Miscanthus and Perennial Energy Grasses e.V. (MEG e.V.), was founded in Bonn on May 30, 2003. Our aim is to network stakeholders from industry, science and practice in the field of perennial and grassy biomass plants. The focus is on the transfer of knowledge in order to jointly shape a sustainable, cycle-oriented future. We are actively committed to the expansion of a sustainable bioeconomy in Germany and Europe. We see miscanthus as the key to the transformation towards a low-carbon economy and as an important building block for achieving the European climate targets. With over 100 members from all over Europe - including farmers, marketers, scientists and industry representatives - we offer a strong network characterized by many years of expertise and innovative approaches. Become part of the Miscanthus Society! Benefit from our extensive know-how, valuable contacts and the opportunity to actively shape the future of sustainable biomass use. The annual membership fee is €50.
Miscanthus is a perennial and fast-growing tall grass that once established, can be grown with minimal inputs, even on less favorable sites. It performs numerous ecosystem services.
The high biomass yields of 15-20 t DM/ha and year can be harvested in spring without any problems with conventional corn choppers. In the lignocellulosic biomass, up to 30 t CO₂ are bound annually.
The biomass can be used in a wide variety of ways in different utilization cascades, including as construction and material, paper and packaging, animal bedding or substrate, although energy use should only be at the very end of the cascade.
